Prescription Ads Crackdown: Why Referral is Your Healthiest Route to New Customers

Prescription-only medicine ads are off the table. Here's how pharmacies can use referral to win new customers, and stay within the ASA and GPhC rules.

In October 2026, the Advertising Standards Authority banned its first ads for oral weight-loss medicines. Paid ads for prescription treatments have become far harder to run, so new customers will have to come from somewhere else.

For a growing number of pharmacies, that’s referral.

Analysis by Bain & Company of Mention Me data, published in Harvard Business Review, found that referred customers make up just 20% of new customers on average, yet generate 72% of new-customer profits, while clicks on shared referral links convert to purchase at more than 3× the rate of paid ads.

Here’s how referral can help you win more better-value customers, without breaking the rules.

How referral fits within the rules

Reward the recommendation, never the prescription. The ASA has ruled against social posts that used referral links and discount codes to promote prescription weight-loss injections, and made clear that a post including a referral scheme can count as an ad even when it comes from someone’s personal account.

Customers should be recommending the service and the care they received, with the reward tied to that relationship.

Never attach a reward to a prescription-only medicine, and never ask customers to share a link to a named treatment, because that’s asking them to advertise it to their friends.

Get that right and referral sits comfortably within the rules. Treat your referral terms with the same care you’d give a clinical process, and run them past your regulatory adviser before you launch.

How to build a pharmacy referral programme

No one brags about buying medicine. It’s not an unhappy shopping experience, but it's hardly something you celebrate like buying a wedding dress.

Pharmacy recommendations happen naturally when a friend mentions they can’t get a GP appointment, or asks where you get your repeat medication. Your programme needs to work in those moments.

1. Ask straight after good care

The best time to invite a referral is just after a consultation where the pharmacist took time to explain a dose properly, or a repeat order that arrived before it ran out.

Set your programme so the referral offer only appears after the clinical consultation, then put the invitation in your post-consultation email and your order confirmation, where customers already feel looked after.

2. Make recommending effortless

Most pharmacy recommendations happen in conversation, with no link in sight. Enable customers to simply enter the name of the person who recommended them at checkout, so the referral is captured and rewarded without anyone posting a link. On average, 34% of referrals across the Mention Me network come through this patented method.

3. Measure the sharing you can’t see

Plenty of customers already send your pages to friends over WhatsApp or text. Mention Me tracks those organic shares and the visits and purchases they lead to, with no incentive involved, so you can finally see which of your services people are recommending.

Results from Mention Me’s own tracking show that clicks on shared links like these convert to purchase at more than three times the rate of paid ads.

4. Make the reward a thank you

The reward matters less than you think. In healthcare, it works best as a thank you, because nobody gambles with a friend’s wellbeing for the sake of a discount code.

Choose useful rewards, like credit towards eligible non-prescription purchases, and use A/B testing to find out which ones your customers value most.

It also pays to weight the reward towards the person doing the recommending. A generous thank you for the referrer, paired with a modest welcome for their friend, keeps the focus on the recommendation, and stops the offer looking like a discount designed to push a purchase.

Proof it works in healthcare

The US urgent care business, Intuitive Health, featured in the Harvard Business Review article, pivoted to referral which cut company-wide customer acquisition costs from $57 in 2015 to just over $20, and in Dallas–Fort Worth its referred customers carry profit margins 4X higher.

One premium natural health brand on the Mention Me platform has won 78,066 new customers and €10.6m in referral revenue, with NameShare® capturing the recommendations its customers make in conversation.

Another UK online clinic on the Mention Me platform sees customers share at more than 3X the category average, and those shares turn into new customers at around 1.6X the benchmark. People do recommend their healthcare providers when you give them an easy way to do it.

Across all industries our platform, referred customers go on to refer 5X more people than customers acquired through other channels, so every new referral helps bring in the next one, and brands see an average 25% increase in repeat purchase.

Why your pharmacy can’t afford to wait

Online pharmacy is a few years behind retail on referral, and the paid route is narrowing fast. Every month without a programme is a month of recommendations happening in your customers’ conversations with nothing there to capture them, while their friends find a competitor first.

Mention Me captures link-free recommendations with NameShare® and tracks organic sharing across WhatsApp and DMs, all on one platform. You keep full control over your referral terms and reward rules, so the programme is built for the rules your pharmacy works within.

Let’s make sure your pharmacy is the one being recommended. You can be live in 1 to 3 days, and before you commit, we’ll use your own data to show how many new customers referral is likely to bring in.
